How to sign “What is your name” in BSL

Common Phrases

BSL and ASL are different languages — this is the British sign. See the ASL sign for “What is your name” instead

Step by step

  1. Hold your dominant index finger up and wiggle it side to side with a questioning look, to sign 'what'.
  2. Point your index finger at the person you are asking, to sign 'your'.
  3. Touch your forehead with your index and middle fingers held together, then twist your wrist so the fingertips point forward, to sign 'name'.

Practice tip

In BSL the topic comes first, so fluent signers often order the signs 'name' then 'what'.
